2022 programs

Ubuntu Pathways: From the landmark South African Black Doll Project launched by the Reverend Linda Tarry-Chard in 1995, we continue to contribute to the lives of women and children in South Africa. Today, we are making a difference through our long-standing partnership with Ubuntu Pathways. This innovative model provides an integrated support system of health, education, and social support in the townships of Gqeberha, South Africa, previously known as Port Elizabeth.

This year, we provided funding to support the staff of Ubuntu Pathways. They have gone above and beyond on the front line of the pandemic over the past two years. Our Staff Wellness Grant helped to provide: 300+ hours of school-wide professional development, cost of living raises in October 2022 for 108 staff members, and financial literacy sessions for nearly 50 employees.

In addition to our mission in South Africa, we continue to be vested in local communities close to home. We have several grassroots efforts focusing on Harlem and the Bronx. Here are some highlights from our year:

View the Six Month Report.

Connecting Communities Initiative: This year we launched the Connecting Communities Initiative, a partnership between Project People Foundation (PPF) and the United Jewish Appeal-Federation NY (UJA). The circle of support has expanded to include the Jewish Community Center of Harlem (JCC) and Meals for Good. Community sponsors / Harlem community organization support from Meals for Good and local churches.

This August, we helped make the transition back to school smoother for over 500 Harlem families. We provided urgently needed backpacks and school supplies through local organizations, churches, and housing developments, such as St. Joseph of the Holy Family, Christ Temple Church, Splash Fit Swim Club, Taft Houses, and District Nine.

In November, we sponsored a Thanksgiving food distribution drive, which provided vouchers and healthy food selections from local farms to over 951 Harlem families adversely impacted by inflation and food insecurity.

Holiday Lights Brings A Glimmer Of Hope To Hundreds: To end the 2022 program year, PPF distributed 360 winter scarves, hats, and diverse books age-appropriate for Ukrainian Refugees, Asian, Russian-speaking, Israeli, African American, and Caribbean students at the Hebrew Language Academy Charter school.

This glimmer of hope and light represents the idea that if we continue to help others, the light of love and giving back will always defeat life’s struggles and feelings of hopelessness and despair.

Splash Fit: Our expanded relationship with SplashFit resulted in a generous three-year gift of $15K per year. This first-of-a-kind multi-year charitable donation will enable additional students to receive life-preserving swim instruction, and offer a safe, healthy fun activity that can be an outlet / set the tone for future employment.

Our success is built that interracial, interfaith, and multicultural community Infrastructure is essential to creating a hub of care, connection, and inspiration.
